A day to remember

Butterfly Butterfly face-painting and crafts for children young and old!

Refreshments served.

Butterflies symbolize transformation, wisdom, joy. According to an American Indian Legend, if anyone desires a wish to come true, they must first capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it.

Since a butterfly can make no sound, the butterfly cannot reveal the wish to anyone but the Great Spirit who hears and sees all.

So, according to legend, by making a wish and giving the butterfly its freedom, the wish will be taken to the heavens and be granted.

Release a butterfly and hear the name of your loved one read aloud during a special commemorative ceremony. Your butterfly(ies) will be held for you at the check-in table until you arrive.

This first annual Butterfly Release will mark the beginning of a beautiful, joyful and healing tradition in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. It's a chance to:
  • set aside a few special moments, in a beautiful surrounding, to pause, remember, honor and celebrate one or more people who were important in your life and whose memory lives on.
  • remember and share the past in a joyful and celebratory way with your children.
  • support programs that help children and families experiencing traumatic loss to heal and recover from their grief.
The cost of reserving a butterfly is $35. If you would like to commemorate a loved one but cannot attend, we can release your butterfly on your behalf. The name of your loved one(s) will be read aloud.

The butterflies are now sold out for this event.
